I have always been a stringed instrument guy. For some reason, guitars, pianos, violins, violas, cellos and double basses have always made a little more sense to me than the brass and woodwind instruments. Over the course of the last year, I have been privileged to be exposed to a myriad of instruments.

Our brass program, in particular has seen some really awesome growth over the course of the past couple of moths. There must be something in the water in Wheaton, because a program that was once dominated by trumpets has seen an explosion of trombones.

Since I had limited exposure to brass instruments growing up, I decided to do a little reach on the instrument. Here are some interesting facts that I learned about the trombone.

  1. Trombone comes from the Italian words for “trumpet” and “large”. Trombone very literally translates to “big trumpet”.
  2. There are s number of variants of the trombone, but the most common is the tenor trombone. It is pitched exactly between the trumpet and the tuba. It is one octave lower than the trumpet and one octave higher than the tuba.
  3. The trombone was used as early as the 15th century, was an instrumental component of Dixie and Big Band jazz, and has even seen a recent resurgence on pop music.

The trombone is a truly versatile instrument that brings awesome textures to classical, band, jazz, pop and even genres like funk and blues. The Jerry Evans School of Music is here to help your student unlock their musical potential. We strive to reach the students ow Wheaton, Glen Ellyn, Carol Stream, DuPage County and beyond.
