Why Brass Lessons?  Why Tuba Lessons?

Almost every day, the Jerry Evans School of Music receives calls from parents who are starting their children on music lessons.  Amidst all of the instrument choices, a number of students want to start a brass instrument like TrumpetTromboneFrench HornEuphonium , or Tuba.  However, some parents shy away from those instruments because they are louder, and it can take more time to start compared to an instrument like Piano.  However, there are a number of reasons to consider starting students on brass instrument lessons, like Tuba lessons.  Here are some great facts about the Tuba:

1.  The Tuba is the lowest and largest instrument of the Brass Family.

2.  Orchestral & Band music leaves it to the Tuba to play the lowest part of the .

3.  The Tuba was patented in 1835, even though Brass instruments have been in existence since at least 1500 BC.  (Wikipedia)

4.  Thought the Trumpet has 3 valves, the Tuba often has 4.

5.  The Tuba has a calm and soft tone that provides a full foundation for an Orchestral and Band texture.

6.  The Tuba has a strong sound that can sound beautiful.

In the end, if your student mentions that they want to start Tuba Lessons or Trumpet Lessons, that is a great reason to start!  Students learn the most and grow the best when they play the instrument of their choice.  So, if they say Tuba, go for it!
