Lately we have been focusing on many of the older instruments that the school offers. There is a wealth of interesting information out there about woodwind or brass instruments. Today, we’re going to bring it back to something a little more mainline – the modern drum set. Drums are actually one of the instruments that made it possible for the school to expand! Jerry‘s very first hire was our drum instructor, David Christensen. Just this week, we celebrated the school’s 3rd birthday when we commemorated David’s first lesson with us.

To celebrate the impact the the drums have had on our school, as well as modern music we know it, we decided to throw out a few interesting drum facts about the history of the modern drum set, which we took from this awesome video

The drums used to be broken up into four or five different pieces. This is something that we still see in marching bands, for example.

A man in New Orleans decided to invent a foot pedal so that he could play the bass drum AND still have both hands free for a snare.

The invention of the bass pedal soon lead to other contraptions, like the high hat. This lead to the drum set being referred to as the “contraption set”. This was soon abbreviated to “trap set”, a term that we use to this day when referring to the modern drum set.
