When you think of a piano, the first picture that usually pops into mind is a grand piano.  But did you know that there are other styles?  Even within the “grand piano” category, there are many different types, differentiated by their size.  Here they are from smallest to largest:  small grand, baby grand, medium grand, living room grand, professional grand, drawing room grand, parlor grand, semi concert grand, and concert grand.  The shape of a grand piano affects how the sound travels and changes.  Because of this, the longer and larger it is, the better it will sound.

Another piano style, is the vertical piano, commonly know as the upright piano.  This is a very compact piano where the strings and sound board are vertical rather than horizontal like a grand.  Like the grand piano, there are different sizes for vertical pianos (shortest to tallest):  spinet, console, studio, and upright.  Modern studio pianos tend to have the best sound, even though uprights are larger.

The third style of piano I’d like to visit is the antique square grand or square piano.  Square pianos were primarily used in the late 1700’s and early 1800’s.  These pianos are incredibly ornate, and high-society women often played them as entertainment for their guests.
