In my last post, I discussed extended techniques used by many skilled flute players.  I also mentioned that plenty of other instruments can use extended techniques.  Violin is popular for extended techniques, just like the flute.

Prepared Violin is probably one of the most unique extended techniques.  Violinists place an object on or around the strings to create a unique sound.  This often includes wrapping wire around a string or placing a hairpin across multiple strings.  Then the player can pluck or bow the strings for even more unique sounds.

For more percussive sounds, many violinists will tap different parts of the violin with either the pads of their fingers or their fingernails.  The player can also add plucking with the opposite hand.

Harmonics on the violin, as well as other stringed instruments, are one of the most commonly used extended techniques for violin.  Harmonics allow the player to achieve much higher notes while using a fingering for lower notes.  There are different types of harmonics, too.  Natural harmonics are the easiest to achieve, but violin players can also play more difficult harmonics, like “touch-4” harmonics.  The main difference between these is the placement of the fingers.
